1919 Will Never be the Same

Tuesday, January 11 by

The Southside Fort Worth community has recently lost a dear friend. Mark Armstrong died this week due to complications related to his respiratory problems. Mark was a fixture at 1919 Hemphill, always greeting show-goers with a friendly “How y’all doin’ tonight?” Mark went to more shows at 1919 Hemphill than anybody else and 1919 will not be the same without him and his Yorkie Sunshine. A memorial service will be held at 10 AM on Thursday January 13 at Hope Works Ministries, 2 blocks north of 1919 at 1701 Hemphill St. We encourage anybody who knew Mark to attend.

Clarke and the Himselfs- Straight outta busking the streets of New Orleans comes the folky wierdness of Clarke and the Himselfs Clarke plays acoustic guitar with backing track and sometimes an assortment of other instruments. One person described it to me as a scary version of the Beach Boys. (New Orleans, LA)

Deanna Valone:  Plays jazz and classical guitar. Bloody fingers and all. (FW)

Giddy Up Nailbiter: Joseph playing solo songs pretty reminiscent to Beck’s older stuff.

Moved to Spiral Diner Fort Worth (1314 W. Magnolia) 9:30 PM. Bring donations for the touring band.

Sometimes bad stuff happens

Monday, April 9 by

1919 recently had a little bit of bad luck that resulted in the front window being smashed out by a few neighborhood kids. There was a gun involved and Rick got punched in the face. We weren’t going to make a big deal about it, but the Dallas Observer wrote an article about it, so I felt I should acknowledge it. Rick is OK and the window is replaced. If you want to help out financially, buy a comp at a show or here or just come out to an event to show your support. Read Rick’s account of what happened here.

924 Gilman needs your help!

Saturday, May 15 by

Thanks for everybody who donates whenever we have rough months. We haven’t had to ask in a very long time and you guys constant support the last 7.5 years has kept us open. Our rent is very cheap and that’s how we manage to keep afloat.
On that note, our cool older brother 924 Gilman in Berkely California is not doing so hot. Their rent is going up $2,700 a month! 924 Gilman is the longest running DIY space in the world and we would all be very sad if it shut down. They are currently taking donations and are offering free shirts with a $25 donation.
Please feel free to throw some of that money you might give to 1919 Hemphill their way. http://www.924gilman.org/blog/

New Site

Saturday, May 15 by

I made a new 1919 website! After years of trying to move to CMS, I finally took the plunge and started using WordPress. So far it’s super great! I am really stoked about the potential for this site. Let me know if you have any suggestions for the new site and I will constantly be updating it and adding the pictures and videos back on it.
